Reducing School Exclusion and Managing Persistent Disruptive Behaviour

This is an increase of 36% over the last 5 years

The number of fixed rate exclusions from state funded primary, secondary and special schools has increased from 302,975 in 2014/15 to 339,360 in 2015/16 to 381,865 in 2016/17 to 410, 800 in 2017/18 and to 438,000 in 2018/19

This is an increase of 44% over the last 5 years

In this presentation we will consider a range of the issues around exclusion including current policies and procedures. We will outline ways to reduce school exclusion through proactive systems and strategies and will focus on the key reason for the majority of school fixed term and permanent exclusions: Persistent Disruptive Behaviour

Issues to be discussed include:

• Current research on school exclusions and the link with mental health
• School exclusions guidance and legislation including School Exclusion risks after Covid 19
• Effectively tackling low level, defiant, demanding and disruptive behaviour
• Making reasonable adjustments for pupils with additional needs
• Strategies for engaging disengaged pupils and boosting attendance
• The link between Bullying and Exclusion
• Working with families to improve behaviour and reduce Exclusion
